History
Principals Brian Skyers and Victor Langhaar met in 1993, when they joined the firm of Law/Crandall. Each had just completed master’s degrees in Geotechnical Engineering (Brian at UCLA; Victor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). At the time, Law/Crandall was engaged in several major transportation and building projects.
The two would often assist LeRoy Crandall, the geotechnical engineer for nearly all of the high-rise buildings in Downtown Los Angeles through the 1960s, 70s and 80s, and a pioneer in the use of tie-back anchors for support of deep basement excavations. Following the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Skyers and Langhaar spent one year assessing structural damage to numerous buildings at California State University Northridge and working on the repair of the heavily damaged Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
After the earthquake-related work, Skyers and Langhaar collaborated as project engineers on two major international ventures: the elevated Bang Na Expressway in Thailand (the world’s longest elevated expressway), and Canada’s Confederation Bridge linking New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island (the world’s longest bridge across ice-covered waters).
The foundation of HD Geosolutions, Inc. was laid in 2004, when Skyers started his own engineering consulting company. He subsequently founded HD Geosolutions, Inc. in 2010, which Langhaar joined in 2013.
